Fallen Fruit: Bloody Turk, Slack My Girdle, and Bastard Roughcoat may sound like colourful insults. In fact, they are names of apples used in Am Afifi's multimedia pomological dirge regretting the loss of the thousand apple varieties that have silently slipped from our orchards, gardens and kitchens over the last eighty years. 'Fallen Fruit' is an interactive multimedia presentation comprising supersize apples. Scattered around the farm, nestling in long grass under a tree, by a stream or amongst the reeds of a pond. They acquaint visitors with the pomicide perpetrated by the supermarkets and the EU in the cause of rationalization and harmonization of farming and marketing practices. An ethnic and genetic cleansing whose results are embodied in an apple cemetery complete with a poignant memorial to the unknown apple. A Cd containing a jamming session, music and lyrics have been composed especially for this piece and will assist the apples to serve a slice of the story of their fall - including the grubbing out of the Robcombe orchard in the 1960s. A limited edition of 99 'pure' apple health drinks completes this 8 part installation. Am Afifii's work has evolved from a classical idiom into an expressionist story-telling style using a range of recycled and found materials and new media techniques. 'I believe that art is the universal non aggressive language through which cultural, political and ideological differences can be aired. It is also fun!' voyagerpn@yahoo.co.uk 01626 864648 |
