'By the row of poplar trees near the pond, I find it tranquil and relaxing to listen to the leaves as they shimmer in the breeze. I have created a sculpture to reflect some aspects of this environment.'
For this year's Art Farm Project, sculptor Anne-Marie has carved an interactive piece that mimics the sound of the poplar trees at Rocombe. Worked in Beer Stone, the naturally open form moves gently to produce a sound that evokes the feelings of seclusion and protection experienced near the trees.
Using stones sourced from the South West, including Portland, Polyphant and Bath Stone, Anne-Marie produces organic, abstract work as well as figurative pieces that explore relationships within the family. Whereas her figurative work starts from an idea that is then carved into the stone, Anne-Marie's abstract pieces respond to the shape of the material and are often contemplative in nature. For her, the balance between the abstract and figurative work in her practice, each requiring a different approach and starting point, is important.
