Ceramics Within Nature: Megalithic standing stones and the landscape of the South West of England are the inspirations for Sam White's work. Currently Artist in Residence at Kelly College on the edge of Dartmoor, Sam creates sculpture that he describes as both site-inspired and site-specific. From an early age, Sam's twin passions have been land art and ceramics. He is fascinated by ancient cultures, 'I'm interested in the mystery behind ancient monuments, the mystery of the civilisation who put them there.' Materials hold an equal fascination - the texture of standing stones, patterns in rusting metal, the spectrum of colours found in natural clay. 'The materials I work with, clay and metal, are very elemental. The processes are antiquated and simple. Why complicate things?' Acknowledging a performative element to his sculpting - he also teaches juggling and other circus skills - Sam describes his creative process as 'a personal journey with the natural environment as my audience.' Sam's work for the Art Farm Project uses materials sourced at Middle Rocombe Farm, incorporating rusting metal found on site with the local red clay. 'Each sculpture is completely individual as is each ancient monolith.' ceramics_within_nature@slugfarm.com 01822 813149 |
