LOUISE SHORT Louise Short studied sculpture and photography at Exeter College of Art graduating in 1986. In 1992 she attended the University of Wales Institute Cardiff with an M.A. in Fine Art. She has exhibited widely in the Europe, the Middle East and Australia. The installation work 'Teething Room' was purchased by the Arts Council Collection of England in 1999. Her interest in collections and commonly used objects have culminated in installations and sculptural assemblages which often utilise various forms of dirt and discarded material. Louise has long been involved in curation, exhibition organisation and consultation, ever since initiating STATION (a former fireboat station) and an old donkey stable/cave, a temporary Research and Development Context for Art, based on Bristol's docks (www.stationbristol.co.uk) of which she is Director. Artists who have done projects there include, Phyllida Barlow, Louis Nixon, and Michael Snow amongst many others. The artists space was opened in 2000 by Turner Prize candidate Tacita Dean. Louise Short has been instrumental in initiating debate, and in making opportunities for artists to realize new works. Her objectives for STATION have been as creative and passionate as her own work, and she has truly offered something to the community of Bristol and the art world at large by bringing these two practices together. Louise teaches in Site Based Practice and Photography at Plymouth University and visiting lecturer to the Sculpture and M.A. Departments at the Cardiff School of Art & Design since 1993. She currently also works as a consultant for Arts Council Engand and Artsmatrix, and is commissioned to produce a new public art work for Crest Nicholson. |
